Lieutenant Commander Antoine Theriot walked into the crew lounge. He found the coffee station. He pulled out a coffee tumbler from the shelf. He picked up the carafe and started to pour himself a coffee. He heard someone approach him from behind. He looked over his shoulder and saw a Trill in operations yellow behind him. He looked familiar but couldn't place it.
Jaxon barely acknowledged the mans existence as he reached over him, tapping a mug to fall from the shelf and catching it with the other hand. "Hey, how about you pour me some when you're done?" he asked, raising his eyebrows as he slid the mug towards the man.
"Don't forget your p and q's, proper manners go a long way," Theriot commented raising the carafe upward before returning to look at the Lieutenant junior grade. He now had a better look at the Lieutenant briefly before placing the carafe on the warmer. He looked familiar but couldn't place it, "Lieutenant Commander Theroit, XO." That was the first time he said it out loud to himself and ears around. "And you?"
"Annoyed," Jaxon said as he rolled his eyes, grabbing the carafe of coffee to fill his cup. "Talk about manners and don't even help someone out when they ask nicely," he said as the liquid poured into the porcelain mug. "Maybe take your own advice next time." He slammed the carafe down on the counter, turning to walk away as the hot liquid sloshed, spilling slightly on his hand. "Fuck," he whispered under his breath.
Antoine took note of his interaction with the Lieutenant while he brought the tumbler to his lips. He studied the man while he poured himself his own coffee before recognizing him, "Ah, yes. I know who you are now, Lieutenant junior grade Jaxon Amolyae. Callsign "Apollo". Ex-fighter pilot."
Jaxon put his coffee mug down, grabbing a nearby towel to wipe the hot liquid from his hand. "There's almost two hundred people on board this ship. The fact that you both recognize me and know this much information, despite never having met me, could be taken as flattery. Be careful Theroit, you might end up in my bed later," Jaxon said with a wink.
After a beat Antoine replied, "You should probably get down to the Infirmary to ice that hand."
"I'm not a pussy, I can handle a bit of hot liquid on my hand," Jaxon said, his voice dripping with boredom and annoyance.
Antoine rose his tumbler up to Jaxon, "See you on the bridge, Lieutenant." He began to walk away towards the exit.
Jaxon looked up to the man, "So is that a 'no' for later?" he asked.
Antoine continued to the exit without acknowledging the flight controller's question. The double door to the mess opened and he walked out.
"Hey, wait up!" Jaxon called out, grabbing his coffee cup quickly as he jogged towards the door, falling into step next to the Commander. "What's your deal?"
"I have a ship to learn," Antoine replied. "Administrative theory stuff, yanno."
Jaxon's forehead scrunched for a moment, "What's that?" he asked, taking a sip of his coffee. He grimaced at the taste, realizing that in the commotion, he forgot to put sugar and cream into it the way he liked.
"You will prolly fall asleep or be very bored if I explained it... even in layman's terms." He brought the coffee tumbler to his lip to hide his smirk, "How's the hand?"
"It's fine, why," Jaxon asked, his usual attitude returning to his voice as he slipped his aching hand into his pocket. "And just because I'm a pilot doesn't mean I'm stupid. I can understand whatever administrative theory is."
"I didn't call you stupid, Lieutenant." Antoine clocked Jaxon placing his hand into his pocket, he then took a long sip from his tumbler. "I said you'd be bored. There's a difference."
They approached the Turbolift, "Push the call button for me, will ya?"
"Your fingers broken?" Jaxon asked as he leaned against the wall, not making a move to press the button. "And you don't know what will bore me. Maybe I'm a fan of things that regular people would find boring?"
"Don't be a smart-ass," Antoine cautioned. He brought his tumbler up to his bottom lip, held a moment on a thought and then continued, "I will explain it if you be a gentleman and an officer and press the damn button."
Jaxon stood there for a moment, locking eyes with the XO as he considered how much he wanted to fight back about this. But after a few seconds, he sighed, pulling his hand from his pocket and pressing the button without a word.
"Administrative theory. Where should I begin?" Antoine thought a moment before the Turbolift arrived. He stepped in, stepping aside to create room in the turbolift car, "Deck 10."
"Maybe start at the beginning?" Jaxon asked, the sarcasm thick in his voice. "And the Bridge is on Deck 6, not 10."
"We are making a....pitstop," Antoine continued, "Administrative theory is the study of how organizations function — decision hierarchies, resource allocation, operational protocols."
He watched the deck numbers change. "On a vessel like the Bergen, that means understanding how every department intersects. Supply chain, personnel management, disciplinary frameworks." He took a sip. "Riveting stuff."
The Turbolift door opened at the requested Deck 10 and Antoine gestured for Jaxon to exit first, "After you."
Jaxon stepped forward smugly. Finally treated with the respect he deserved. "Ok I admit, this sounds boring as fuck. Does everyone in command need to care about this shit?" he asked.
Antoine followed Jaxon out of the Turbolift and then joined along side of him as they walked down the corridor, "Everyone in command needs to be at least familiar with the theory in question. Starfleet by the very definition is an organization that prides itself on proper administrative management. Something I've focused on for the majority of my career in Starfleet."
"So you got into Starfleet knowing you wanted to be in Command and you wanted to care about administrative bullshit?" Jaxon chuckled, "Couldn't be me. I just want the controls of a vessel at my fingertips. To feel the mass of my craft move at my will. Nothing but the stars in front of me and everything else...well, behind me."
"No, I never sought to be the captain let alone an executive officer of a starship," Antoine smiled as they came to the door of Sickbay, "The infirmary. Get that hand checked out, Lieutenant. That's an order."
Jaxon opened his mouth, probably to say some smartass comment, before the realization of where they were set in. "You set me up! I'm not going in there. It's nothing, I'm perfectly fine."
"Yes, yes I did. You're too stubborn and proud. And besides, it's XO's prerogative to bring you to the infirmary. Now get into Sickbay and report to Doctor Powers."
"And what if I don't?" Jaxon asked, crossing his arms but smirking at the man.
"I may consider going on a date with you."
"I-" Jaxon stood there, his mouth hanging open slightly in shock. He wasn't exactly sure what he expected the man to say but it certainly wasn't that. Seconds ticked by as his eyebrows raised before he finally closed his mouth. "W-well..." He cleared his throat. "Who said I wanted a date with you?"
"I said maybe. Operative word there," Antoine shuffled himself and entered the infirmary. He raised his hand to get the medical Lieutenant's attention.
Jaxon huffed as he followed the XO into Sickbay. "I didn't ask, nor do I want to go on a date with you."
"How can I help you?" asked a woman in a nursing uniform as she walked up to the two men.
"I don't actually need medical attention," Jaxon said, rolling his eyes as he looked at the XO. "But I did spill some hot coffee on my hand and the Commander here is being a bit overprotective."
The woman picked up his hand, inspecting it. "Well you're not at risk of losing any skin, but the redness and inflammation do indicate skin damage. It's best if we use a dermal regenerator at least, maybe a bit of an analgesic so this isn't so painful. I imagine this hurt quite a bit," she said as she gestured for him to sit at a biobed while she gathered supplies.
"It doesn't hurt at all actually," Jaxon said as he slid onto the biobed, giving Antoine a smirk. "I have a high pain tolerance."
Antoine chose to ignore the flight controller's comment and addressed the nurse, "I will leave him in your capable hands, Nurse."
Antoine turned to Jaxon and offered him a smirk before leaving him to Sickbay.
"Wait you still hav-" Jaxon stopped midsentence as the doors closed behind the Commander. His forehead scrunched in annoyance that this man seemed immune to his ribbing, never rising to the occasion when he teased him.
The nurse came back soon after, gently lifting his hand as she began to rub the ointment on it.
Jaxon winced at her touch. Ok...maybe this hurt more than he was letting on. But he certainly wasn't going to give Antoine the satisfaction of knowing that.
